|01/21/2011|| THHS SAGES Program|
The Townsend Harris Alumni Association is looking for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Alumni and Allies to be a part of an upcoming program at the High School. Many Alumni have reached out to us after the recent stories of bullying and teen suicides, asking how the school is responding.
Townsend Harris is committed to the social and emotional health of its students. The school is actively involved with the Rachel's Challenge Program: http://www.rachelschallenge.org/, and is working with many of the student leaders on how they can continue to foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment.
In an effort to support the efforts at the school, and engage some of the alumni that have expressed an interest in getting involved, we are coordinating an event in partnership with the SAGES student group, in January 2011 at the High School.
SAGES is a political, social, and educational club for all members of THHS, whether you're a part of the LGBTQ community or a supporter. We want to raise awareness and gather support for common LGBTQ issues, such as Don't Ask, Don't Tell, gay marriage and recognition, discrimination in the workplace, and this year specifically, homophobic bullying. We sponsor school wide events such as movie screenings and the yearly LGBTQ Rainbow Reading in association with the Phoenix.
We are looking for LGBTQ alumni and allies who might want to be a part of this event. We are aiming for mid-January.
We are still in the planning phase of this event, and welcome your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. Please contact us at SAGESevent@thaa.org.
