David M. Herseznhorn ’90

David M. Herszenhorn ’90, has served as the co-chairman of the Townsend Harris Alumni Association since 2004, and was the first graduate of the re-opened Townsend Harris High School to be elected president of the Association, a position he held from 2001 to 2004. He served as an alumni representative on the C-30 search committees that led to the appointment of Thomas Cunningham as principal in 2000 and the appointment of Kenneth Bonamo as principal in 2008. He also helped initiate the Townsend Harris Forever! fund-raising campaign.

Since 2006, David has served as a member of the Board of Proprietors of The Dartmouth Inc., a non-profit corporation that owns the student newspaper at Dartmouth College. David has often led workshops for high school journalists and faculty advisers of student newspapers through the New York City Scholastic Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

David is a Congressional correspondent for The New York Times and has covered major legislative developments on Capitol Hill, including the government’s emergency rescue of the financial system and bailout of American automobile companies in 2008, the economic stimulus measure and the landmark health care debate in 2009 and the sweeping financial regulatory bill in 2010. He also wrote the Prescriptions blog on nytimes.com about the health care legislation.

He has appeared on numerous cable, television and radio news shows, including Charlie Rose and the News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS.

Before becoming a Congressional correspondent, David covered education and the New York City public school system for the Times, from 2003 to 2007. His previous assignments included City Hall during the Giuliani administration and The New York Times Neediest Cases in 1996-97. He started at the Times as a copy-boy in 1991. David is also a shop steward of the Newspaper Guild of New York, and was recently elected as a trustee of the Guild-Times Benefits and Welfare Fund.

David is a 1994 graduate of Dartmouth College, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in Asian Studies with a Middle East focus, was elected to the Casque & Gauntlet senior society and was editor-in-chief of The Dartmouth, the daily student newspaper.

David is married to Christina Pan Marshall, who is also a graduate of the Townsend Harris Class of 1990. They live in Chevy Chase, Maryland with their two sons, Miles and Isaac.
