Based on feedback from some of our classmates who wanted to give back to the school, we asked Principal Barbetta wanted the school and current students needed. Principal Barbetta brought to our attention two potential gift items:

    • The patio area at the new school is devoid of any furnishings. There are no tables or seats for the students to use.
    • The folding seats use by our Townsend Harris Hawks during games are in terrible condition and need replacement.
Either request will cost about $3,000. We believe it would be a great gesture by the Class of 1989 is we can at least get them one of these items. To do this, the alumni association has added a Class of 1989 gift line that one can donate (tax deductible) to help the current students.

If you wish to help out on the reunion committee, please email us at events@thaa.org.

    04/21/2012Honoring Wanda Nix

    Wanda Nix Day

By now you’ve probably heard – on Saturday afternoon, April 21, the Townsend Harris family will be honoring Wanda Nix with a ceremony to dedicate the school gymnasium in her name. Students, alumni, parents, faculty and friends will be on hand to celebrate the career of Ms. Nix, longtime Athletic Director and Dean and original TH faculty member who retired last June.

Aside from the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony, we will have fun events to commemorate the occasion. In the coming weeks, you’ll receive more details on these events and learn how you can participate. There will also be time to mingle with Ms. Nix and fellow Harrisites – some of whom you may not have seen in years. We will also have light refreshments for the convocation.

Few teachers have inspired their students in the way that Ms. Nix has. Physical Education teacher at Townsend Harris for 27 years, and Athletic Director 24 of those years, her passion for fitness, competition, sports and education have been a hallmark of her time at THHS.

We ask that you let us know if you will be attending so that we may get an accurate headcount. And while there will be no entrance fee for the dedication ceremony, we are suggesting a contribution which will go towards both defraying the costs of day as well as towards the programs of the Athletics Program that Ms. Nix built over her career. Either way, please let us know if you are coming by email us at nix@thaa.org.

    Suggested levels of contribution:

    Level Amount Representing
Donor $9 Number of Championships Won
Patron $27 Years Ms. Nix Dedicated to THHS
Silver Patron $50 Minutes of the "Ms. Nix" jog
Crimson Patron $84 Year Ms. Nix Began at THHS
Gold Patron $200 Four seasons of the “Ms. Nix” jog

You may make contributions by clicking here or by sending a check to Townsend Harris Alumni Association, P.O. Box 1422, New York, NY 10113.

As a token of our appreciation, Silver Patrons will receive a Townsend Harris Water Bottle. Crimson Patrons will receive a Townsend Harris Athletic Department Tote Bag. Gold Patrons will receive a Townsend Harris T-Shirt and will be designated as an event sponsor. But keep in mind, these contributions are at your discretion; any amount – large or small – would be appreciated – and no one will be turned away based on contribution.

    Guest Book

We have set up a guest book so that students, faculty and friends may share stories or tell us how Ms. Nix has affected them. Click here to view or make an entry to this guestbook.

We look forward to seeing you on April 21, and watch for more announcements about this exciting day!
